In this study from 1996, Haji Muhammad al-Qaaim Safa Sawada examines Scientology theology, scriptures and ceremonies—first in their own right and then in comparison with other religious traditions, namely indigenous Japanese religions, with which the author is abundantly familiar due to association and geography. “In conclusion,” he writes, “one cannot reach any other decision than that Scientology is a religion. It has more similarities to Japanese religions than Western religions, and for this reason it may be misunderstood in the West for not being similar to the other mainstream religions. But, nevertheless, it is an international religion, very similar to religions in Japan that have adherents numbering 20 million.”

BIOGRAPHY

Haji Muhammad al-Qaaim Safa Sawada studied Eastern and Western religions for half a century, with a background in both Islam and Shintoism. He served as the eighth Holder of the Secrets of Yu-itsu Shinto, the oldest religion in Japan. Yu-itsu Shinto means “The Way of One God, Creator of Heaven and Earth.” The first Holder of the Yu-itsu Shinto Secret, or Tamanoya secrets, as they can also be called, was Shotoku Taishi (Crown Prince of Shotoku) 1,440 years ago. The second Holder of the secrets was Emperor Tenmu of 712, who also wrote Kojiki, the first written historical record of Japan. The third Holder of the secrets was the founder of the Shugendo religion. In addition and reflective of his background as a Muslim, Mr. Sawada was accorded the venerated Islamic title of Haji, having completed a pilgrimage to Mecca. He served as president of the Ahlul-Bait (AS) Center in Japan and translated the Qur’an into Japanese. He was once director of Sophia University, one of Japan’s most distinguished universities, and offered his service as chairman of the Christian Democratic Party of Japan.
