Costa Rica has a voluntary religious-registration law for religious organizations. In August 1991, the Public Registry for Associations registered the Association Church of Scientology within the juridical framework for churches and religious nonprofit organizations in Costa Rica.
“The Associations Registry has authorized the functioning and approved the statutes of the entity known as ‘ASSOCIATION CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY’… whose principal aims are… The study, investigation, development and cultural dissemination of the spiritual self-improvement technologies of Dianetics and the spiritual philosophy of Scientology.”
