In the strong belief that to protect religious freedom requires defending it for all faiths, Mr. Fefferman has worked with the Church of Scientology and other religions on religious freedom issues for decades. He states: “The Church of Scientology has been in the forefront of the struggle for religious freedom. I would say Scientology members are among my closest allies in the fight for religious freedom.” Describing the Church of Scientology dedication to that purpose, he says: “Once they commit to something, they are very trustworthy, very reliable and they always keep their word. And they always persevere to the very end.”
Video transcript:
I’ve worked with Scientologists for ten, fifteen years, mostly on religious freedom projects. And I have really been impressed by their dedication and their commitment and their willingness to work with others, not always in their own self-interest but for the good of the cause.
Religious freedom is the first freedom in the Constitution, or the Bill of Rights: Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion. The Church of Scientology has been in the forefront of the struggle for religious freedom in the United States since the 1970s and 1980s, particularly the defeat of deprogramming, putting the Cult Awareness Network, CAN, out of business. That was a tremendous accomplishment and the Church of Scientology deserves great credit for that, along with several other groups, but especially the Church of Scientology.
We marched forward together into anti-cult conferences and confronted the falsehoods that they were teaching about our different groups. And we’ve also been involved on Capitol Hill to publicize what’s going on around the world in terms of religious freedom. So I would say that Scientology members are among my closest allies in the fight for religious freedom.
One thing that I’ve noticed about Scientologists is that they are very committed and determined to make a difference in the world and once they commit to something, they are very trustworthy, very reliable and they always keep their word. So I think that they really do make a difference because they are so determined and they always persevere to the very end.
